Bring the World Home: Spices I Always Grab When I Travel

I’m obsessed with bringing flavors home from my trips. Not just any flavors: the ones that immediately take you back to a place, a moment during a trip, and makes you smile. Over the years, I’ve found a few that I love and can no longer cook without. Here are my favs that you have to pick up while you are there:
Nutmeg Dry Meat Rub from Grenada
Grenada is called the “Spice Isle” for a reason. This nutmeg meat rub? Pure heaven. I sprinkle it on roasted veggies, chicken, anything that needs a little extra warmth and little extra something. Every time I open it at home, I’m instantly back in Grenada: sun on my skin, spice in the air.
Nutmeg Syrup from Grenada
And since we talking about Grenada and nutmeg.... you also should grab you some nutmeg syrup. It’s rich, aromatic, and basically has me putting it on everything I used to put maple syrup on. Drizzle it on pancakes, waffles, desserts, or even stir it into your coffee for a little island magic. I honestly stock up whenever I can.
Akabanga Chili Oil from Rwanda
I remember when I tried this for the first time. I was in Rwanda and our guide was warning me to try one drop and like a bad kid I did 3 drops and my mouth got LIT UP. It is hot but so damn good. If you love heat, you need this. Rwanda’s Akabanga chili oil is smooth, smoky, and straight-up fire. I put it on grilled fish, chicken, chili, basically anything that could use a little kick. It’s one of those things that makes you feel fancy and adventurous at the same time.
Curry Powder from Jamaica
Jamaica isn’t just beaches and jerk chicken: it’s also curry heaven. Along with grabbing coffee, I always grab curry powder when I'm in Jamaica. Toss it on chicken, veggies, whatever, and it instantly turns dinner into a little island escape. Honestly, just smelling it is a mood.
Pepper Sauce from Antigua (and other Caribbean islands)
Clearly there is a theme here from the spices/things I'm recommending you buy: I like hot shiit. And Pepper Sauce is def a must buy when you are visiting any Caribbean island. Pepper sauce is a whole vibe. Antigua’s version is fire and one of my favorites, but really, every island has its own take, and I love picking up a few bottles to bring home. A little goes a long way, and suddenly my kitchen feels like a mini Caribbean spice market.
Next time you’re packing your bags, skip the usual souvenirs and make room for a little taste of the island. Trust me: your kitchen (and your friends) will thank you. Ready to plan a getaway that’s all about the flavors, culture, and experiences you’ll actually remember? Let’s make it happen.
