Some people travel for the beaches. Others for the adventure. Me? I travel for all that, but especially for the food. There’s something about Caribbean flavors—the fresh seafood, bold spices, and the mix of African, Indigenous, and European influences—that keeps me coming back for more.
On my travels, I’ve eaten my way through some of the best foodie destinations in the Caribbean, and these five stand out. Whether you’re craving grilled seafood on the beach or a comforting plate of stewed meats and dumplings, these islands serve up dishes that will have you booking a flight just to eat again.
1. Barbados
If Barbados had a national scent, it would be the aroma of fried flying fish sizzling in a pan. This island is a dream for seafood lovers, and you have to try flying fish and cou-cou, the national dish. The fish is seasoned, lightly fried, and served with a side of cornmeal and okra-based cou-cou, similar to polenta.
But let’s talk about the real star of Bajan cuisine: a good plate of macaroni pie. Baked to perfection with cheese, spices, and sometimes a hint of mustard, it’s the best comfort food.
2. Antigua
Antigua takes its food seriously, and after my recent visit, I’m still thinking about the fungee and saltfish—a hearty, savory dish that’s the island’s national treasure. The fungee is a cornmeal-based side, similar to polenta, served with perfectly seasoned saltfish.
For a taste of real Antigua, try goat water, a flavorful stew that’s packed with rich, spicy flavors. It might sound simple, but once you taste it, you’ll understand why it’s so popular.
Of course, no trip to Antigua is complete without some rum punch and a fresh seafood platter while soaking in the beach views. Whether it’s grilled lobster, conch fritters, or a plate of jerk chicken, the flavors here are unforgettable.

3. St. Maarten
St. Maarten is a foodie’s paradise, blending Caribbean, Creole, and French influences into every meal. It’s one of the best islands for gourmet dining, but you don’t need a white-tablecloth experience to eat well here.
You must try Johnny cakes—fluffy, slightly sweet fried bread that pairs with just about anything. Another standout is stewed conch and dumplings, a hearty, flavorful dish that showcases the island’s love for slow-cooked comfort food.
The French side of the island, Saint-Martin, is known for its lobster and French-Caribbean fusion. One of my favorite meals was a plate of grilled spiny lobster with Creole sauce, paired with a crisp glass of wine on the beach.
4. Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a food lover’s dream, offering some of the most flavorful and diverse dishes in the Caribbean. One dish that stole my heart? Mofongo. This mashed plantain dish, mixed with garlic and crispy pork or shrimp, is a must-try.
If you love slow-roasted meats, head to the island’s famous lechoneras for lechón, Puerto Rico’s legendary roast pork, which is cooked over an open flame for hours until it’s crispy and flavorful.
And don’t forget the sweets—Puerto Rico’s flan and tres leches cake are the perfect way to end a meal. Wash it all down with a piña colada, the island’s signature cocktail (which, fun fact, was invented in San Juan!).

US Virgin Islands
The US Virgin Islands serve up some of the best Caribbean food, and if you’re visiting, you must grab a pate—a deep-fried pastry stuffed with spiced meat, seafood, or veggies. It’s a quick bite that packs a ton of flavor. Another fav? Chicken Fry. Just get it while you are there and thank me later. Also loved fungi (cornmeal and okra mash), which is similar to cou-cou from Barbados. Also had some of the freshest seafood I've ever had there and at a local restaurant on Wednesday, they offer a pretty sweet deal on whole lobsters (pictured above before I devoured it).
If you’re into drinks, a trip to St. Thomas or St. John wouldn’t be complete without sipping on a painkiller cocktail—a creamy, rum-based drink with pineapple, coconut, and nutmeg.
These islands aren’t just about stunning views—they’re a dream for food lovers. If you’re craving an unforgettable culinary adventure, let’s plan your next trip. Whether it’s a beachside feast in Antigua or a foodie tour through Puerto Rico, I’ll make sure you experience the best flavors the Caribbean has to offer.
