I have always been curious about Morocco, but didnt't know enough to officially add her to my must-travel-to list. After attending an event hosted by the Morocco Tourism Board, I was struck by everything Morocco has to offer travelers to experience. It’s a country where ancient history, vibrant creativity, and deep cultural ties come together in the most inspiring and soulful way. While many travelers know about the famed blue city of Chefchaouen or the urban pace of Casablanca, there’s so much more to discover beyond the usual stops. Here are my three reasons you should add Morocco to your travel bucket list.
1. Experience Living History and Black Heritage in Cities Like Fes and Essaouira
Morocco’s story is woven from Berber, Arab, Sub-Saharan African, and French threads — and that cultural blend is especially vivid in cities like Fes and Essaouira. Fes, one of the oldest cities in the world, is like walking through a living museum: its ancient medina (aka marketplace) is full of artisans, storytellers, and spiritual spaces that haven’t changed much in centuries.
In Essaouira, you’ll find rich African roots reflected in the music and traditions of the Gnawa people, descendants of West African communities. Their trance-inducing rhythms and ceremonies are not only unforgettable but a deeply spiritual link to the broader African diaspora. These stories, often underrepresented in mainstream travel guides, make Morocco especially resonant for Black travelers seeking meaningful cultural connection.
2. The Food Is Bursting with Flavor and Generosity
Moroccan cuisine is warm, welcoming, and full of bold, earthy spices. Think slow-cooked tagines, saffron-laced couscous, sweet-and-savory pastilla, and streetside msemen (crispy flatbread served hot off the griddle). Food in Morocco is more than a meal — it’s an act of hospitality, often shared in beautiful courtyard homes called riads or under the stars in desert camps.
Whether you’re navigating a spice market or taking a hands-on cooking class, Morocco’s culinary scene is ideal for travelers who explore through their taste buds.
3. It’s Easier to Reach Than You Might Think
Despite feeling like another world, Morocco is surprisingly accessible from the U.S. There are direct flights from cities like New York, Washington D.C., and Miami into Casablanca or Marrakech. Once you arrive, trains and domestic flights make it easy to explore different parts of the country — from historic cities to coastal retreats and desert escapes.
The country is investing heavily in tourism, with curated experiences, English-speaking guides, and a wide range of accommodations that cater to solo travelers, families, and luxury seekers alike.

Final Thought: Don’t Just Travel — Connect
Morocco isn’t just a beautiful destination, it’s a cultural journey. From centuries-old Black heritage sites to flavors that linger in your memory, Morocco offers a deeper kind of travel experience, one that nourishes the soul and sparks curiosity. Whether you're planning your next bucket list trip or just starting to dream, Morocco deserves a spot at the top.
