When people think of Rwanda, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is often the headliner and with good reason. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience. But Rwanda is also full of surprising beauty, cultural depth, and peaceful landscapes that deserve just as much attention. Whether you’ve already done the trek or you're simply looking for a more balanced itinerary, here are other experiences in Rwanda that left a lasting impression on me and might just do the same for you.
Wander Through Kimironko Market
For a more sensory and upbeat experience, head to Kimironko Market in Kigali. It’s where locals go for everything, including produce, fabrics, baskets, and daily essentials. If you love textiles or handmade goods, this is your spot. Bring small bills, a bit of patience, and maybe an extra tote bag—you’ll leave with something unique.
Take a Lake Kivu Day (or Two)
After time in the mountains or city, Lake Kivu is the perfect place to recharge and enjoy the serenity of Laky Kivu. It’s one of Africa’s Great Lakes and stretches along Rwanda’s western border. The towns of Gisenyi and Kibuye are peaceful, scenic, and filled with lakeside charm. Kayaking, boat rides to small islands, and sunset drinks by the water? Yes, please.

Explore Nyungwe Forest National Park
If you love nature but already checked gorillas off your list, Nyungwe Forest offers something different, including lush green hills, waterfalls, and one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. You can go chimp trekking, spot hundreds of bird species, or walk the famous canopy bridge suspended high above the forest floor. It's a nature lover’s dream.

Support Women-Owned Cooperatives
Rwanda is full of women-led businesses and cooperatives that are changing lives. From handwoven baskets and jewelry to coffee and tea production, many of these groups welcome visitors. You get to meet the artisans, hear their stories, and purchase beautiful, high-quality souvenirs that support local communities directly.
Experience Traditional Dance & Music
Rwandan dance is expressive, powerful, and full of storytelling. Some cultural centers in Kigali and Musanze offer evening performances or workshops that showcase traditional music and dance. It’s a great way to understand the spirit of the country beyond the history books.
Join a Banana Beer (Urwagwa) Tasting & Brewing Experience
Rwanda’s traditional banana beer, known as Urwagwa, is both cultural emblem and social connector. The experience is hands-on and communal: peel and mash bananas, add roasted sorghum, and ferment the mixture over a few days. You’ll taste the gently sweet, slightly tangy result in village-style clay pots, often sipping together via straws. It’s an immersive way to learn about Rwandan craftsmanship and hospitality
There’s More to Rwanda
Yes, the gorillas are incredible. But Rwanda’s magic doesn’t stop there. It’s in the quiet morning mist over Lake Kivu, the laughter in a market, the rhythm of traditional drumming, and the strength of people rebuilding with purpose. This country invites you to slow down, look closer, and stay longer.
And if planning a trip to Rwanda feels overwhelming, I’m here to help. Whether you want to see the gorillas or skip the trek and dive into culture, nature, and connection, I’ll build a trip that fits you perfectly. Contact me today to get started.
