Ghana holds a special place in my heart and was one of my most memorable trips. From lush waterfalls to powerful historic landmarks, every moment I’ve spent there has been rich with beauty, learning, and connection. If you’re planning a trip to Ghana or just dreaming of one, here are some of my favorite spots you won’t want to miss:
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park – Honoring a Visionary
This beautifully designed park in Acraa and mausoleum pays tribute to Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. It’s a peaceful place to reflect on Ghana’s journey to independence and admire impressive sculptures and fountains while also learning about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. It’s more than a historical site—it’s a celebration of African leadership and legacy.
The Big Market – For Custom Clothes & Cultural Vibes
If you want to dive into local life and get custom clothes made, head to one of Ghana’s lively open-air markets—I love Makola Market in Accra or Kejetia Market in Kumasi. The energy is unmatched! You can find vibrant African prints, friendly tailors who can make you something stunning in a few days, and all the colorful sights, sounds, and smells that make Ghana feel so alive. I will say that it can be a bit overwhelming so you might want your tour guide to take you.

Wli Waterfalls – The Tallest in West Africa
Wli Waterfalls, located in the Volta Region near the Togo border, is pure magic. Please note that it is 4 hours away from Accra, but I promise you it's totally worth it. After a scenic hike through the forest—where you might spot monkeys and butterflies—you’re rewarded with the thunderous rush of water pouring from the cliffs. Standing in the mist at the base of the falls is one of the most refreshing and humbling experiences I’ve had. It’s a great way to immerse yourself and feel connected to Ghana’s natural beauty.
Aburi Botanical Gardens – A Peaceful Escape
Just a short drive from Accra, Aburi Gardens offers a quiet, lush retreat from the city’s bustle. It’s the perfect place for a morning walk or picnic under towering trees. The gardens are not only beautiful but full of history, with colonial-era buildings and trees planted over a century ago. I would definitely recommend taking the official tour and learn about this beautiful place.

Cape Coast Castle – A Place to Remember
Visiting Cape Coast Castle was one of the most emotional and heavy parts of my journey. I'm not going to lie, it's a lot. Walking through the dungeons, learning the pain, suffering, and hardship that my ancestors experienced at this place and the "Door of No Return" was a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of my ancestors. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Ghana’s role in the transatlantic slave trade and to honor those who came before us.
W.E.B. DuBois Center – A Legacy of Pan-African Thought
Located in Accra, the W.E.B. DuBois Center honors the life and work of the legendary scholar and civil rights activist who chose to spend his final years in Ghana. His mausoleum and personal library are here, alongside a peaceful garden and museum. It's a reflective space that reminds us of the deep ties between African Americans and the African continent—and the enduring fight for freedom, unity, and identity.
