Planning a Trip to the NFL Madrid Game? Don’t Make These Mistakes

The NFL going international again this upcoming season and has a lot of people looking at trips they normally wouldn’t to support their team while also checking out a cool new destination and Madrid is definitely one of those cities that offers a lot of cool experiences.

But if you’re thinking about going this year, this is not something I wouldn't recommend that you wing it or figure out last minute. Here are some common mistakes I see travelers make when booking a trip to Madrid:

Mistake #1: Waiting too long to book

This is the biggest one. Honestly it's a mistake that most people make when booking any type of travel.

Flight prices will not stay reasonable once people lock in plans. Same goes for hotels in areas that actually make sense for the trip.

And what usually happens is people wait, then end up either:

  • paying way more than they expected

  • or staying somewhere that makes the whole trip feel less smooth

If you already know you want to go, this is the kind of trip you start locking in early...not later.

Mistake #2: Thinking it’s just like a regular NFL game

It’s still the NFL… but the experience around it is different.

Different country means:

  • different stadium entry flow and rules

  • different security expectations

  • different timing around getting in and out

So even if you’ve been to plenty of games in the U.S., you can’t assume it will feel the same once you’re there.

Mistake #3: Not considering how you’ll actually move through Madrid

Madrid is a great city, but it’s not something you want to figure out day-of.

Where you stay matters. A lot.

Because if you’re too far out or not near the right areas, you end up spending unnecessary time getting to and from things instead of actually enjoying the trip.

And with a game layered into it, timing becomes even more important.

Mistake #4: Treating it like only a game trip

Yes, the game is the reason you’re going, but it’s not the only thing worth experiencing.

You’re in Spain! If your entire plan is centered around the stadium and nothing else, you’re honestly missing out on a big part of the experience. Madrid has great food, energy, and neighborhoods that are worth exploring beyond game day.

So what actually makes this trip smooth?

It comes down to planning early and planning with intention.

Understanding:

  • you’re going international, not just to a different city

  • logistics will feel different than a normal NFL weekend

  • and the city itself should be part of the experience, not an afterthought

That’s where most people either overcomplicate it—or underestimate it. If you’re considering heading to Madrid for the NFL game and don’t want to piece everything together on your own, sign up to receive Beyond the Stadium intel on making your international travel seamless.
