"Travel agents still exist?" "Why would you book with a travel agent when you can look everything up yourself?" "My cousin worked with a travel agent before and they made everything so much more expensive, why should I work with you?"
Believe me, as a travel agent, I get these questions ALL THE TIME from potential clients that are wary of working with me for the first time. Maybe they have been burned by another travel agent before. Maybe they see all of the trolls online with their pitchforks claiming travel agents are unnecessary and to take your trip into your own hands. If you’ve never worked with a travel agent before, you may have some misconceptions and fears about how the process works. With so much information available online, many travelers assume they can handle all the details themselves. But here’s the thing—working with a travel advisor like me doesn’t just save you time; it enhances your entire travel experience. Let’s break down three of the biggest myths about using a travel agent and why they simply aren’t true.
Myth #1: Travel Agents Are Expensive
Many people assume that hiring a travel agent comes with hefty fees. The reality? While some agents charge planning fees (me being one of them), these costs often save you money in the long run. Travel advisors have access to exclusive deals, perks, and industry rates that aren’t available to the general public. Plus, we help prevent costly mistakes, ensuring you get the best value for your investment. Instead of spending hours searching for deals (which 99% of the time may not be as great as they seem), a travel agent can find the right options for you, saving both time and money. We spend HOURS meeting with hotel and tour partners, cultivating relationships for our clients. We spend HOURS learning about different destinations and spend money to travel to these destinations so we have first-hand knowledge of each destination we sell. We are passionate about what we do so all our clients have to do is show up and enjoy their vacation.
Myth #2: I Can Just Book Everything Online Myself
Yes, you can book your own travel—but should you? Planning a vacation isn’t just about clicking “reserve” on a hotel website. A travel advisor brings expertise, personalized recommendations, and logistical know-how that an algorithm/Tiktok/ChatGPT can’t match. We factor in your preferences, past experiences, and even potential travel hiccups to craft an itinerary that runs smoothly. Plus, if something goes wrong—flight cancellations, resort issues, unexpected changes—you have an advocate who will step in to handle it for you. No more waiting on hold for hours with a customer service line! I have literally stayed on hold for 6+ hours for clients dealing with a cancelation issue. I don't play when it comes to my clients and making their travel life easier.
Myth #3: Travel Agents Only Book Cruises and All-Inclusive Resorts
While travel agents are great at booking cruises and all-inclusive vacations, that’s not all we do! We design customized experiences that go far beyond standard packages. Whether you’re looking for a private villa in the Caribbean, a boutique hotel in Europe, or a cultural tour in Africa, we craft trips tailored to your unique interests. From securing hard-to-get reservations to arranging authentic private tours and transfers with our local partners that's not offered on Viator, travel advisors make sure your journey is seamless and unforgettable.
Why Work with a Travel Agent?
At the end of the day, working with a travel professional is about more than just booking a trip—it’s about having a curated, stress-free experience designed around you and what you want to experience. Instead of getting lost in an endless sea of online reviews and booking sites, you get expert guidance, VIP treatment, and peace of mind knowing that every detail is taken care of.
So, if you’ve been hesitant to work with a travel advisor because of these myths, now’s the time to rethink your approach. Your next dream vacation is just a conversation away!
